About DemyLee
Demy Lee moved to New York City from her native Korea where she studied at Parsons School of Design. After graduating, she held design positions at Calvin Klein and GAP Inc., and she later played a key role in launching Tory Burch’s first collection. After the birth of her first daughter, she decided to launch her own line in 2007, designing what she appreciated and reached out for the most – sweaters.
Originally focusing exclusively on cashmere, DEMYLEE New York has now expanded to include not only an expansive range of knitwear and accessories, but also cut-and-sew knits and woven essentials, as well as a mens collection called LAD by DEMYLEE which is exclusive to Japan.
DEMYLEE New York caters to those who appreciate the simple luxury and powerful versatility of the individual piece. Her signature balance of timeless sophistication and youthful novelty fills a niche in the industry for classic yet current knitwear.
Since its launch, the line has been picked up internationally by retail giants including Steven Alan, Ron Herman Japan, Harvey Nichols, and over a hundred other retailers.
Each collection starts at the DEMYLEE design office in Chelsea, New York. The design process includes researching, meeting with yarn suppliers, and designing four seasons a year. In between, we work on special projects such as collaborations with our friends and exclusives with our retail partners. Once designs are finalized, we receive samples which are fit and modified in-house. Once the sample is approved for production, each piece is knit, linked, finished, and lastly quality checked. We have very close relationships with our production teams based in Hong Kong, Southern China, and Inner Mongolia. We seasonally visit our teams abroad to review production and sampling.
Our cashmere is sourced from goats in Inner Mongolia and then spun into yarn. Other non-cashmere yarns are sourced from different suppliers all over the world, like Italy or Asia, then sent and produced into garments in China. We hand select each yarn and colour every season — ensuring quality and wearability for our brand and customers.
We are in open discussion with suppliers and our production team to find ways to include recycled fibres and yarns while still keeping our brand accessible. Our yarn suppliers source raw materials that maintain certified high standards of animal welfare. Certain yarns can even be traced back to the specific farm or region it originated.
We produce pieces based on order, which ensures that we do not overproduce styles that would otherwise contribute to textile waste. Every year, we try to find creative ways to give back to our community. In the past, we have found different organizations to donate leftover inventory, as well as made special benefit pieces for charity auctions. At this point, we are still a small brand, and hope to work with you in some way.
